Reading Recovery
- Targets 1st grade students who have the greatest difficulty learning to read and write.
- Taught by a RR teacher 30 minutes every day - responsive to each child’s strengths and needs.
- Goal is to ACCELERATE each student’s progress to average levels in 12 to 20 weeks.
How are 1st Graders Selected?
- Recommendations from Kindergarten and 1st Grade Teachers from all buildings
- FAST assessments in the Fall and Winter
*Those students are tested using the Observation Survey Assessment
*Data from tests are compiled and students are selected based on the highest number of low scores
1st Round Students
- Receive 12-20 weeks of instruction
Tested again at the end of 20 weeks to determine student’s status ...
- “Discontinue”=graduates the program
- “Recommended”=is recommended for further support in Title I Reading or Special Education
Lesson Features
Each lesson includes the following:
- Familiar Reading
- (including running record)
- Word Work
- Writing
- New Text
2nd Round Students
At the end of the 1st Round students who are not proficient or not making expected growth are tested using the Observation Survey Assessment. Students selected for 2nd Round usually receive 10-12 weeks of instruction (to end of school year)
Tested again at the end of the year
- “Discontinue”=graduates the program
- “Incomplete”=not enough time to know if student would discontinue
