MP West Elementary Playground Ribbon Cutting

The latest facility improvement at Mid-Prairie Community School District was officially christened with a lot of laughs, whoops, and smiles on Monday when students at West Elementary were able to finally climb, slide, hang, and spin on their new playground equipment following a ribbon-cutting attended by students, staff, and board members.

The accessible playground has a turf surface and is connected to the elementary school by a new sidewalk.

Mid-Prairie has been consistently and strategically addressing a variety of facility-related projects for several years all without raising the property tax levy rate. Recently completed projects include renovations at the middle school that added a number of new classrooms and renovated additional spaces as well as a classroom addition at East Elementary School.

Since passing a bond in 2023, with a 70% approval by residents of the district, Mid-Prairie has continued to invest in facilities with the goal of enhancing the learning environment for all students in the Mid-Prairie Community School District.

In March, the district will celebrate the completion of the new Mid-Prairie Activities Complex. The 12,800-square-foot building is being constructed into the hillside between the existing football stadium downhill and gym building, the indoor practice facility uphill. It will include a three-mat wrestling room with attached locker rooms, a weight room with views out over the football field on the upper level, and a walk-out lower level below to support the football stadium and track, including a concessions stand, restrooms, and storage.

Other improvements paid for with the 2023 bond include new classrooms and ADA-compliant restrooms at  West Elementary School. Construction will begin this spring and is scheduled to be completed for the start of the next school year.

All of these projects are the result of a community-based planning process that has continued through each project and phase. To date, the district has completed 17 of the 37 needs originally identified by the committee without raising the property tax levy rate.

The community-based Facility Advisory Committee last met earlier this Fall to confirm next steps based on the remaining needs. The district plans to reconvene the group early in 2026 to review next steps as the projects using funds from the 2023 bond will be complete by the end of summer 2026.

In 2023, committed to keeping the bond below $10 million without impacting property taxes, the committee anticipated a second future bond referendum to pay for additional larger-scale projects, while maintenance and smaller projects, such as systems updates and paving, could be paid for using sales tax and other revenue.

“All of these projects would not have been possible without the unwavering support of the community and the Board of Education and Facilities Committee,” said Superintendent Brian Stone. “Their dedication to improving school facilities underscores the spirit of collaboration that defines Mid-Prairie. As we move forward with these improvements, we thank everyone involved for their commitment to enhancing the educational experience for our students, staff, and community. Go Hawks!”
