Thirty-five students from Mid-Prairie Middle School were among the nearly 160,000 students worldwide to participate in the Math Olympiad Program this year. They participated in a series of five monthly contests of five problems each, from November to March, and weekly practice sessions under the supervision and coaching of Rebecca Yoder. Yoder worked with students to solve unusual and difficult problems and to think creatively.
The students responded well and were recognized with certificates for their participation. Top individual scorers for the school also received trophies. In the Elementary Division, Jacob Flynn earned the Highest Individual Scorer trophy and Hannah Rodgers earned the Honorable Mention trophy. In the Middle Division, Kina Miller and Jackson Zahradnek tied for winning the Highest Individual Scorer trophies and Jacob Flynn earned the Honorable Mention trophy.
Twenty-one of the Mid-Prairie Middle School mathletes won National Awards for Excellence. The Gold Pin is awarded to those in at least the 98th percentile (top 2%). Jacob Flynn with a score of 23 out of 25 points, was in this extraordinary group. The silver pin is awarded to those in the 90th-97th percentiles, including Hannah Rodgers (19) and Griffin Caskey (18). The embroidered felt patch is awarded to those in the top 50% of all the participants, including Chase Rundall, Cobi Hershberger, Bryce Bailey, Anna Flynn, Miles Edgington, Charlotte Sieren, Callie Huber, Mason Bender, Tara Poole, Rowan Miller, Andrew Kaufman, Landry Gingerich, Lincoln Miller, Griffin Caskey, Hannah Rodgers, and Jacob Flynn in the Elementary Division and Alivia Poock, Henry Yoder, Phoebe Shetler, Jacob Flynn, Jackson Zahradnek, and Kina Miller in the Middle Division.
Each year the Math Olympiads Program serves over 150,000 students on over 5,200 teams nationally and about 30,000 students on 1,000 teams in more than 35 other countries. Since 1979, it has provided challenging, thought-provoking problems that stretch the abilities of students in grades 4-8, strengthening their foundation for both assessment tests and more advanced studies. Mid-Prairie Middle School students have responded to the challenge with eagerness and enthusiasm.
