Girls BB - Iowa Girls Coaching Association - E Wayne Cooley “You Can” Award

Sophia Puttmann, Mid-Prairie - Nominated by: Jenny Hobbs Head Coach Mid-Prairie Basketball

“Sophia, as a junior, stepped up when the JV team was down to 5 players. Because of her our JV can play games and get valuable experience which will help our program in the future. Sophia is also involved in softball, band, speech, choir, 4H, FFA, Student Council, and church activities. She is a selfless leader that has a team first attitude which makes her invaluable to our basketball program. She makes everyone around her better.

Mid-Prairie Jazz Band member Thomas Lueck selected to play in Class 3A All State Jazz Band, first MP student to do this in Class 3A. Thomas is the first Mid-Prairie High School musician to be selected to play in the Class 3A All-State Jazz Band.

The Class 3A jazz band is usually full of musicians from much larger schools such as Harlan, Pella, and Xavier. It is a great accomplishment for Thomas to make it into this elite group of musicians. His talent was recognized by the Jazz Educators of Iowa. The All-State Jazz Band Concert is on Thursday, May 14 at 3:30 pm at the Downtown Des Moines Marriott during the Iowa Bandmasters Convention.

The whole Jazz Band competed in the Jazz Band Championships at Iowa State University on April 7th Below are pics from that event.

Mid-Prairie 2026 IHSSA Individual Events State Contest Competitors: (front, l-r) Fiona McClellen, Addison Skelton, Ryann Dolan, Jillian Clark, Caroline Schrader, and Wren Harris. (back row) Ben Trotta, Brock Lowenberg, Greyson Ghumm, Kenna Schrock, Tabitha Fisher, Stella Miller, and Meredith Campbell.

13 members of the Mid-Prairie Speech Team competed in 21 events at the Iowa High School Speech Association's State Individual Events Speech Contest at Vinton-Shellsburg High School on Saturday, March 14, 2026. Of those 21 events, 19 got Division 1 ratings, and 11 earned All-State nominations, and are advancing to the IHSSA Individual Events All-State Festival on Monday, March 30 at the University of Northern Iowa.

AND 5 students were selected Outstanding Performers in their area - Ryann Dolan, Caroline Schrader, Wren Harris, Brock Lowenberg, Fiona McClellen (all qualify to perform at All State)

With two All-State nominations from the  March 14 IE State Speech Contest, Caroline Schrader has broken the record for career All-State Nominations at Mid-Prairie by finishing her career in competitive speech with the IHSSA with 11 All-State nominations. The record was previously held by Haydon Bailey, Class of 2024.

From Coach Meader, “This year, 594 students representing 209 Schools achieved All-State Nominations. (The IHSSA has a membership of over 490 schools). Only two other schools took more events than us to All-State in SE Iowa District.  And in the entire state, only 7 schools are taking more events to All-State than Mid-Prairie. This is the only competition that schools compete in that are not separated by class that I know of. We are definitely holding our own with these big schools and their piles of coaches - often with some of the bigger schools, each separate event gets its own coach. So, this is a testament to the talent we have at Mid-Prairie, and Lisa and I are so excited and proud of you all!!”

Mid-Prairie Speech Coaches are Christine Meader and Lisa Helmuth.
