Ava Miller competes in math contest. She advances to state contest

On Saturday, February 27, over 140 3rd-6th grade students from Iowa, Illinois, Nebraska, Kansas, and Texas joined in for an Online Mathleague.org Qualifying round contest. As the largest network of local and state math competitions at the elementary, middle, and high school levels in the United States and abroad, mathleague.org runs more than 400 contests globally and reaches over 30,000 students each year.

Six students represented Mid-Prairie Middle School at the event, 5th graders Madilyn Liska and Gwen Wunderlich and 6th graders Maelys Beachy, Ava Miller, Jack Sorrell, and Samantha Wunderlich.

The competition was split into four individual testing rounds and one team round. In the number sense round, students used mental math to complete as many of the 80 questions possible in ten minutes. The sprint round consisted of 30 multiple choice problems that students had to solve within 40 minutes and without the use of a calculator. In the last individual round, the target round, students were given four pairs of word problems and six minutes per pair. Finally teams of 1-4 students put their heads together to solve 10 word problems in 20 minutes for the team round. Afterwards, the top 8 students competed head to head in a countdown round.

Madilyn Liska, Gwen Wunderlich, Maelys Beachy, and Ava Miller qualified for the State level competition which will be hosted Online on May 8, 2021. There will be one more qualifying round before the state level.
