Five Mid-Prairie Middle School students put their math skills to the test in the 2020-2021 Mathleague.org Middle School In-School contest on March 8 & 9. Seventh graders Griffin Caskey, Landon Humble, Lincoln Miller, Rowan Miller, and 8th grader Jacob Flynn completed the individual sprint and target rounds and joined forces for the team round. The sprint round consisted of 30 problems that students solved within 40 minutes and without the use of a calculator. One point was awarded for each correct answer. In the target round, students were given four pairs of word problems and six minutes per pair. Each correct answer earned a point.
Finally teams of 1-4 students put their heads together to solve 10 word problems in 20 minutes for the team round. Each correct answer was awarded a point. Top-scoring students in qualifying rounds were invited to compete in their State Championship contest, held in March. After submitting scores and waiting for results, all five Mid-Prairie students qualified for the Iowa State competition!
Rowan Miller participated in the online state contest on Saturday, March 20. Multiple state contests were combined in the zoom-held competition. Over 230 students from Alabama, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Tennessee, Texas, and Wisconsin completed the sprint, target, and team round tests over the course of 3 hours. Afterwards, the top 16 students competed head to head in a countdown round from five different states. Winners of each State Championship are invited to compete in the US National Middle School Championship in June.
