Mrs. Jabbari’s Advanced Comp class is in full swing after turning in their first paper: a Narrative Writing. They have been working on learning about The Writing Process as well as other important aspects of writing such as how to write beginning and ending paragraphs. They also did an “Escape Room” activity to learn more about how to correctly use MLA Formatting.
Ms. Pacha’s British Literature class has been trekking through the Middle Ages. After reading Beowulf, students presented the connections they saw between the story Medieval Culture. Students also took a virtual tour of Westminster Abbey, visiting the famous Poets’ Corner (you can take the same tour by clicking here). Students have also been working on writing strong discussion questions and annotating to better understand the text.
Mrs. Jack’s Creative Writing class is smack dab in the middle of a poetry writing unit. To learn more about poetry and gain insight into different styles and forms, students competed against one another in a poetry tournament, filling out a bracket of 16 poems and voting for poets to move forward in bracket play. They also have been practicing writing poems in numerous forms, employing a plethora of poetic techniques to their writing. Next week they will show off their poetry writing skills as we finish up the unit by writing several poems over a topic of interest to them.
Mrs. Mercer’s English 9 classes are getting ready to dig into their first novel, Long Way Down, by Jason Reynolds. Students worked through stations learning about the author, exploring themes, and making predictions before reading. This novel is written in free verse, so it looks like a bunch of different poems that create one story. Students will be analyzing and creating poetry as we move through this unit.
