MP student presents report to friends and family

The 4th Grade ELP Reading Group hosted an "Evening in Afghanistan" event for friends and family on the evening of Dec. 10 at the Mid Prairie West Library as a way of sharing their learning from a reading unit on The Breadwinner.  Impacted by the book, students wanted to learn more about the history and culture of Afghanistan. Their interest developed into an excitement to share with others. Each student picked an area of focus, then students developed presentations, planned the event and invitations, baked khatai cookies, and organized other refreshments and activities for guests.

Over 60 guests attended the event. A range of presentations included poetry, plants, clothing, women heroes, landmines, history, food, marketplace, animals, sports/ traditional games, and summaries of the book. Following time for student presentations, Jennie Wunderlich, a retired army captain and mother of an ELP student, shared stories of her time in Afghanistan.
