Congratulations to MPHS Student of the Week, Grace Skelton! Grace was nominated by Mrs. Silbaugh, "Grace went above and beyond with a Renaissance artist presentation in Western Civilizations. Her presentation was strong in her speaking skills and showed a lot of effort and passion for the topic she learned. Grace is one of the students who is traveling to Italy this summer where she will get to see some of these works in person; I am happy she will get to experience some of these places she has taken the time to learn so much about!" Great work, Grace! #mphawks

A special shoutout goes to one of our MPMS 8th-grade student, Rachel Lamb! Rachel participated in the Science and Technology Fair of Iowa (SSFTI) and came away with multiple awards. She is the first student from MP Middle School to ever participate in this event. Around 600 students participated from 71 schools, showing about 400 projects. Rachel’s project titled, “Can You Cook a Steak by Slapping It?” earned 1st place in 8th grade physics and astronomy and 1st place overall in junior high physics and astronomy. The project began last spring when Rachel chose this topic for a presentation in Mr. Lambert’s 7th-grade social studies class. From there, she entered the project into the Johnson County Fair last summer, earning a purple ribbon, and was selected for the State Fair. At the Iowa State Fair, she earned a blue ribbon and was considered for the Judge’s Choice Award. The judges encouraged her to enter the project into the SSFTI. The project became more and more complex with each of these events, and for this final event, Rachel tested the hypothesis by “slapping” the steak with weights and measuring the temperature change. She did conclude that a steak “could” be cooked by slapping it, but it would be destroyed by the slapping before it was fully cooked. Besides Mr. Lambert for the inspiration to first start the project, Rachel would also like to thank Ms. Tunning, MPMS 8th-grade science teacher, for registering her for the fair and supporting her project as well. Rachel’s dad, a high school science teacher at West Liberty, also helped her to pursue this project and the events she was involved in. We are very proud of Rachel, her hard work, and her accomplishments! #mphawks

Congratulations to MPHS Student of the Week, Haydon Bailey! Haydon was nominated by Mrs. Meader, "Haydon is a great student leader in the speech and drama departments, and is highly respected by his peers in those departments. As student director for the spring play, he has given the production loads of imaginative vision, from designing the set, to acting multiple roles on stage, to leading warmups before most rehearsals. Haydon has also provided insight in all aspects of this play, and the wizarding world behind it. All while being an excellent student!" Great job, Haydon! #mphawks
